The former Countdown co-presenter recently told HELLO! magazine that she is planning an extravagant year-long celebration to mark her 50th year on the planet which takes place in December this year.
Carol's 50th Birthday Celebrations
Carol cites the fact that she was born on Christmas Eve as the main reason for a lifetime of missed parties with few people wishing to celebrate on the eve of Christmas Day. She aims to counter this by having a year-long round of birthday celebrations ranging from small family afternoon teas to lavish celebrity dinner parties and themed evenings.
Dawn Chorus and the Blue Tits - The next Bananarama?
Many will associate Carol solely with her role in the Channel 4 T.V. programme Countdown, but I can reveal that in her younger days, she had aspirations to become a pop star and was part of a trio who included the Radio One DJ Liz Kershaw and went under the name of Dawn Chorus and the Blue Tits.
The girls were formed in the early 1980's in Leeds with Vorderman and other member Lindsay Forrest singing backing vocals with Kershaw on lead. They recorded a version of John Peel's all time favourite song "Teenage Kicks" (originally recorded by The Undertones) but the single sank without a trace as did their pop careers and she joined Yorkshire Television in 1982.
The Countdown Years
Carol answered an advertisement which her mother had seen in a newspaper for someone to become part of a new T.V. show that Yorkshire Television was putting together in Leeds. She applied and was given the job and the first episode of Countdown aired on the new Channel 4 station on 2 November 1982. Carol forged an unforgettable relationship with the shows main presenter Richard Whiteley and although she remained with the show following his death in 2005, it was never quite the same - although she maintained a good working relationship with both Des's - Lynam and O'Connor. She eventually left in July 2008 citing contract problems with her employers of 26 years.
Carol's Work Outside Television
Carol has done a range of things outside of her television work, ranging from journalism to commercial ventures; launching a range of Suduko games as well as starting her own property development company which unfortunately failed due to the worldwide downturn in economies, with trading being suspended in 2009. This year has seen her launch an online mathematics coaching system for children aged between 4 and 12 called MathsFactor.
Private Life
Carol lives with her mother Jean and children Katie and Cameron, having recently separated from long-time partner, Daily Mail journalist Des Kelly.
The full exclusive interview with Carol about her birthday can be found in the latest edition of HELLO! magazine, which is on sale now.
